Overview of the Civic Exam

The Civic Exam is an official assessment designed to evaluate candidates’ knowledge of the fundamental values and principles of the French Republic, as well as their understanding of civic rights and duties and the functioning of French institutions.

Since 1 January 2026, passing this examination has become mandatory for:

  • Applications for a multi-year residence permit

  • Applications for a long-term residence card

  • Applications for French citizenship (naturalization)

This examination is developed by the French Ministry of the Interior and is administered in officially accredited examination centers.

Examination Format

The Civic Exam is structured as follows:

  • Duration: 45 minutes

  • Total number of questions: 40 multiple-choice questions (MCQs)

    • 28 knowledge-based questions

    • 12 situational judgment questions

  • Mode of delivery: digital (computer or tablet)

  • Required pass mark: 80% (32/40 correct answers)

  • Level adaptation: varies according to the type of administrative application

  • Certification validity: unlimited validity upon success

Examination Content

The assessment covers the following thematic areas:

  • Values and principles of the French Republic

  • Rights and responsibilities in France

  • Organization and functioning of French institutions

  • French history, geography, and cultural knowledge

  • Civic life and social norms in France

Examination Preparation

The Ministry of the Interior provides an official and freely accessible question bank to support candidates in their preparation.

Alla Croix School also offers a dedicated preparation program (x hours 30 minutes), designed to optimize success rates through targeted training and guided practice. Candidates may register for this preparation course alongside their exam registration.

Results and Certification

Examination results are generally available within xx hours following completion of the test.
Successful candidates receive an official certificate by email, intended for use in administrative procedures.

Please note that this certificate is not required for the renewal of an already issued residence permit.
